1937 Mercedes Benz 540K Special Roadster
The 540K is Mercedes Benz’s finest example of pre-war excellence and mastery. Very low production numbers and a serious price tag made the 540K an extremely exclusive ride back in the day. Other than the extraordinary one-off Autobahnkurier (and that was a slightly later model), you couldn’t really go more top of the line than with the incredible Special Roadster. A symphony of beautifully crafted curves, the “Spezialroadster” feels more like a museum-worthy sculpture than a functioning, road going machine.

1962 Ferrari 250 Zagato
So, by the year you know this isn’t a 100% authentic 250 GT Zagato. Should you care? Yes. Should you care enough to the point of not buying it? Well, first things first: what is it? In 1998, two 62’ 250 GTE chassis were rebuilt as 56′ Zagatos (and certified by Zagato itself), this particular example being one of them. It’s custom made, it’s classic Ferrari based but it still has the unavoidable issue of not being an original double bubble roof 250 Zagato. For any possible buyer, it comes down to the old argument of originality versus opportunity: do you absolutely need to have the real article or would a well made recreation be enough to satisfy you?
