2004 Aston Martin DBAR1

Aston Martin DBAR1One of the lesser known yet most beautiful of the modern Aston Martins, the DBAR1 is Aston’s unique gift for the US market. This stunning convertible, a much prettier version of the already striking 2002 DB7 Zagato, is not common in Europe at all and as such, it’s not cheap either…but if you’re looking for something genuinely unique, then the American Roadster 1 is definitely the car for you. Packing the same V12 as the Vanquish (and since we’re talking Zagato, let me just say that I’ll always be heartbroken that the Vanquish Roadster Z wasn’t meant for production…), the DBAR1 does 0-60 in under 5 seconds and can reach 186 mph; not bad at all. Plus, this is a very exclusive ride because only 99 were made (actually, a final one – number 100 – was created exclusively for Aston Martin’s factory collection). If you have the means don’t miss out on this beauty.

1965 Porsche 904

Porsche 904By 1962 Porsche decided to say “forget this!” to Formula 1 and focus back on racing sports cars. The way they solidified this very wise move was by building one of the coolest racers ever made, the legendary 904. Only in production for 2 years, the 904 is a champion, having left its mark everywhere from Le Mans to the Targa Florio, Monza, Spa, Daytona, Nurburgring and even the Monte Carlo Rally. So much from a car with such a small (but very cool) 4 cylinder engine; amazing. 106 road going super fun, super light 904s were made and this particular one certainly looks great. The seller describes the full history of the vehicle from the time it was sold in Iceland, making its way to America where it won more than one SCCA races. However, this particular example might not be a purist’s cup of tea since the original flat 4 was replaced by a 6 cylinder of a 911 in 2005. Not a bad engine by any means, but a point down on originality, so it turns into a debate of power/reliability versus factory spec. Personally I don’t think it takes anything away from it because as we know, in 65 several 904 (the 904/6s) had a flat 6 so…

1988 Porsche 959

Porsche 959Who doesn’t like a 959? It’s just one of those cars…so difficult not to fall hopelessly in love with it. There’s good reason for these strong feelings too; the 959 is one of the granddaddies of modern super cars. Back in 1986 it was the most technologically advanced and fastest production car in the world. 86 was in fact “the” year for the 959, I mean the Rally version won the Dakar for crying out loud! And the racing variation – a single car (the 961) – won its class at Le Mans first try. With this kind of potential and racing pedigree, the twin turbo beauty had to become a collector’s item, the Holy Grail for Porsche enthusiasts. This particular example is not the super rare, super expensive “Sport” trim; still, it’s a very nice “Komfort” variation in an unusual color (for these), UK spec (yet left hand drive), one owner machine – a British Earl according to the seller. So if you can, go ahead and get Lord Grantham’s 959, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

2006 Aston Martin Vanquish S

Aston Martin Vanquish SThe Vanquish, a.k.a James Bond’s ride on “Die Another Day”. Along with the DBAR1 that we looked at earlier, this is also one of the best looking modern Aston Martins. Now that the exclusive manufacturers like Aston have adopted the “let’s make all of our models look exactly the same so that the guy buying the cheapest one doesn’t feel so bad” philosophy followed by the more accessible car brands and because – due to this kind of strategy (let’s call it that, although I can certainly think of much more colorful words for it) – I can no longer distinguish a Vantage from a DB9, from a DBS, from a Vanquish, it sure feels nice to look at something you can actually tell what it is at first glance. That’s the case with the “old” Vanquish. It’s gorgeous, it has loads of charisma and no one will ever mistake it for anything else. However, by 2005 the Bond-mobile was starting to feel a bit outdated and underpowered (especially since it’s seriously heavy). Aston Martin promptly addressed the issue by making it even heavier and calling it the Vanquish S. Ok, don’t get disappointed just yet, it was worth it! Everything about it was better, more refined. The power output went up considerably from 450 to 520bhp. The suspension, the breaks, even the atrocious gear box…all revised and perfected. Sure, the box still sucks to no end, but hey, improvement is improvement and even that can’t take away from the sheer barrel of fun this thing is.

Do you a need a vehicle which can comfortably transport you and your favorite lieutenants while still having the necessary boot space to carry several dissidents? Well look no further. Crush the revolutionary spirits with 3 tons of German intimidation, also known as the 600 Pullman limousine. In all seriousness, this is an amazing, amazing ride! 1993 Jaguar XJ 220

Jaguar XJ 220The second coolest Jag ever (behind the E-Type, naturally), it doesn’t just look amazing, it is one of the greatest cars the world has ever seen. The XJ220 held the title for fastest production car with a top speed of 213mph and it remained the undisputed king of the Nurburgring for 8 years; 8! You’d think such an accomplished piece of machinery had some sort of super developed V12 but you’d be wrong. The XJ220 actually had half that: a V6 twin turbo putting out 540bhp, allowing for a 0 to 60 time of just 3.6 seconds…in 1992! Truly extraordinary car.

2010 Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG Black

SL65 Black SeriesIf you were to buy an SL600 you’d already be getting quite a lot of car for your money. After all it’s a very nice, refined roadster with a big V12 engine in it, awesome. However, if that’s still far too bland for you then you’re gonna want the loony bin version of it, courtesy of Mercedes’ nuttery central – more commonly known as AMG. Problem solved right? Well, no. Some of our friendly horsepower crazed Germans at Affalterbach looked at the 604bhp SL65 and thought: “Hmm, you know what that needs? More power”. What they come with was the Black Series. Germany’s shot at making a modern muscle car, the SL65 Black has 661bhp and so much torque that you may accidentally get the planet rotating in the wrong direction when you set off. This thing is (and certainly looks) extremely mean. More powerful, lighter and stiffer than the regular SL65, the Black is actually a relatively old fashioned piece of machinery when compared to other cars in its league and that’s not a bad thing. Electronics can meddle too much, just look at modern Ferraris…In the Black you can really put your driving skills to the test when you turn the ubberly intrusive ESP off. You need to remember of course that by doing so, if there was a “top” for cars that could kill you the quickest, the SL65 Black would probably be sitting comfortably at #2 just below the original Viper. Still, don’t let that scare you off this rare, gorgeous, wonderful, tire shredding machine. This is it, the ultimate SL, a Mercedes AMG colossus.

1972 Ferrari Daytona Shooting Break

Ferrari Daytona Shooting BreakLadies and Gentlemen, feel free to freak out because the Daytona Shooting break by Panther is for sale (again)!!! One of the most outrageously imaginative applications of the shooting break form, the special Daytona that Panther (yes, that Panther) came up with is the stuff of dreams for some and nightmares for others. Personally, I think it’s a really cool creation; the gullwing side windows alone are a tremendous triumph of style and creativity. Unique in every single possible sense of the word, the Panther Daytona is now offered for sale (for an undisclosed amount) after failing to find a new owner at the 2008 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction. At the time it had an estimate value of between 400 and 500 thousand USD, a huge increase from when it was sold at another Bonhams auction back in 2005 for just over 260.000 USD. Whatever the price tag may be today, if someone’s on the market for a one of kind Ferrari this is most definitely it.
